Posted January 06, 2017

The man and the women were both over the age of 50 and lived in the area covered by Idaho Health District 6, which covers Bannock, Bear Lake, Bingham, Butte, Caribou, Franklin, Oneida and Power counties.

Health officials said there has been a spike of people visiting emergency rooms in Fresno County, suffering from flu like symptoms. The CDC has reported 22,048 flu cases from September 30 through December 31, 2012 compared with only 849 for the same period previous year.

"This is a reminder for all of us to take appropriate precautions against getting influenza", Solano County Deputy Health Officer Dr. Michael Stacey said in a statement. "Our levels may still be going up".

People in long-term care facilities - residents and workers - are particularly at risk.

The epidemic designation comes well before the typical peak of the flu season in February or March. “And we expect that to continue to spike with this next weeks report.”. Guam, the US Virgin Islands, and 13 states reported regional flu activity.

Those who are not feeling well are also reminded that by staying away from the hospital, and postponing visits to loved ones, they can avoid the risk of passing the flu on patients with weakened immune systems.

Renée Paré Montreal public health
Dr. Renée Paré said this year's flu season should peak in late January or early February

“While our peak this season is much earlier than it was past year, where we are now is a more typical season, ” she said. Recent epidemiological testing of 205 influenza virus specimens collected this season showed low resistance to the antiviral medications, suggesting that these medications will offer effective treatment to those who do become ill this flu season.

"So that's always good news", Fenno said. The season could last another two months or more, he said.

No significant activity was reported in Calhoun County.

How can people tell influenza from the mumps?

The doctor reminds us that the influenza vaccines work against the influenza virus only and are no defense against the common cold. The first occurred last month, and the second recently occurred in central Iowa in an elderly man who already had health issues.

The health district also recommends some very basic procedures to keep from spreading the flu if you are sick: covering your nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing, washing your hands frequently, and using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water arent available.
