The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months and older.

While this year's flu numbers are out of the ordinary, the C.D.C.is reporting that Memphis is one of the cities in Tennessee seeing a higher number of flu-related illness.

The largest number of deaths has occurred in Health District 4, which includes Ada, Elmore, Boise and Valley counties. "Being vaccinated is your best option to protect yourself and your family from influenza". It is important that those who have underlying health conditions or may be caregivers of high-risk individuals check with their physicians or healthcare providers about antiviral medications that might help them recover more quickly from the flu.

School officials say they will now remain closed until they are told by authorities that the area is safe. The main spillway is already damaged and running water started to erode the left bank of the spillway.

Hospitalizations for flu are also increasing steadily, with the overall rate now at 29.4 per 100,000 population, the CDC said.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. The other low tech and very effective way to prevent the spread of the flu is to wash your hands frequently with soap and water. High-intensity flu activity, another measure of clinic visits for flu, was reported for 28 states and New York City, reflecting an increase of 5 states compared with the week before.

Flu activity, which so far is categorized as moderate, is expected to continue for several more weeks.
