Roman Polanski to return to the US

The filmmaker was accused of drugging Samantha Gailey before raping her at a friend's house in Los Angeles in 1977. He's apologized. I forgive him.

Polanski was convicted of raping a child after a photo shoot in Los Angeles in 1977 and spent 42 days in prison before being released.

Polanski maintains he fled for Europe in 1978 because he feared the now-deceased judge overseeing his case would renege on a plea deal stipulating he would only serve a maximum 48-day sentence.

Polanski plead guilty to drugging and raping the then 13-year-old Samantha Geimer in which he served a 42 days prison sentence before fleeing the US, when he thought a judge would sentence him to do hard time.

In 2009, the Chinatown director was captured in Switzerland and spent 334 more days in custody while US authorities unsuccessfully attempted to extradite him.

It is understood Polanski wants to be able to visit his wife Sharon Tate's grave. Polanski had lured her there on the pretext of photographing her for French Vogue.

In a statement, Polanski's spokesman claimed: 'This controversy has been generated by totally unfounded information, forty years after the issue in question. The Polish Supreme Court also dismissed the U.S. order and declared that he had served his time under the plea deal.

In case you need a refresher, the Oscar winning filmmaker fled to Europe after pleading guilty to USA charges for having sex with a 13-year-old girl at Jack Nicholson's home in 1977.

His case remains an worldwide cause celebre, where some argue it is time to drop U.S. demands for his extradition but others say he must be punished.

It says his case can not be resolved until Polanski, who has both French and Polish citizenship and lives mostly in Paris, returns to California to face justice. That's when Polanski fled the US for Europe.

France does not extradite its nationals. Switzerland ultimately refused the request for extradition.
