Most banks will be closed though you may find a branch here or there in a store that's open. Buses are running, but schools are closed.

Presidents' Day falls on the third Monday in February in honor of our first president's birthday. But if you weren't able to take care of a permit or some other business last week, don't try today.

According to state statute we have a number of state holidays that do not have full holiday status, including the anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans, Confederate Memorial Day, and Huey P. Long Day. Most county offices are closed again.

There's no regular mail delivery and post offices will be closed.

Mount Vernon, George Washington's northern Virginia estate, is also offering free admission for the President's Day holiday. Our first, George Washington. According to History.com, in 1800, the year after Washington died, "his February 22 birthday became a perennial day of remembrance.' For years it was celebrated with the same passion with which Americans still celebrate the Fourth of July".

"What if we don't want to celebrate all presidents?"

It was the popularity of Abraham Lincoln, and the fact the his birthday is only 10 days before on February 12, that made people reconsider how we celebrated our most iconic presidents, and others after them.

The holiday later became an occasion to pay tribute to the first president, George Washington, and the 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, albeit more recently it has become a holiday to honor all US presidents past and present.

Washington should have a standalone holiday and if the country wished to extend a similar honor to Lincoln, it can be done with enough separation so as not to overlap each other.

As the first President of the United States, Washington's birthday marks a day when all presidents typically receive an indirect performance review of their term or terms served.

Many now consider it a day to recognize all presidents, and a time to cash in on some Presidents Day deals.
