THE DOCTOR IS IN: Senate Confirms Ben Carson As HUD Secretary

Underscoring the challenges he faces at HUD, the National Low Income Housing Coalition released a report on Thursday that found a shortage of 7.4 million affordable and available rental homes for extremely low-income households.

The vote cleared the way for the retired neurosurgeon and former Republican presidential candidate to assume the post of secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

The National Reverse Mortgage Lenders Association followed suite.

Dr. Ben Carson won Senate confirmation to join President Donald Trump's Cabinet as housing secretary.

I look forward to working with the new Secretary to afford some relief to our small public housing agencies in MS and across the country-an effort I've been leading in the House over the a year ago.

Even beyond the trade associations, politicians on both sides of the aisle supported Carson.

The only somewhat soft spot was employment, which still expanded, but at a slower rate, slipping to 54.2 from 56.1. There is, he said, "at least the feel of sustained demand for automobiles".

The final vote is expected Thursday, and Carson appears to have the votes needed for confirmation.

Trump praised Carson as a "brilliant physician" earlier in the month.

"The yays are 58, the nays are 41". And Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) made no social media comment on Dr. Carson, focusing her attention instead on Attorney General Jeff Sessions' current controversy regarding his 2016 conversations with the Russian ambassador to the U.S.

There is still support coming in from other politicians, albeit mostly Republicans, congratulating Carson. "Dr. Carson knows that removing regulatory barriers is a necessary component of any national housing policy and that housing is key to the long-term health of the US economy". "Based on the history of failed socialist experiments in this country, entrusting the government to get it right can prove downright unsafe".

Jumaane Williams, New York City councilmember and chair of the city's Housing and Buildings Committee, said on the show that the thought of Carson as HUD secretary was nothing less than concerning.

"NFHA's goal is to eliminate housing inequality and expand housing opportunities and we are ready to work immediately with the new administration on the following key priorities to expand housing choices", said Rice.
