Victoria Police divers are due at the Murray River by 9am to continue searching for the boy after initial attempts to find him last night failed.

New South Wales Police have found the body of a young boy in the Murray River near Moama, while the child's mother has been remanded in custody on a charge of attempted murder.

It then emerged that a five-year-old boy who was related to the injured boy was missing.

She appeared before Deniliquin Local Court earlier today in relation to the nine-year old boy's injuries.

She had already been charged with attempted murder, and in a brief hearing, the town's tiny courtroom heard she is likely to be charged with more offences.

The children had been in the care of their grandparents and their grandmother remains by the nine-year-old's side at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne.

The father of the boys has spoken of his devastation and said he was numb after learning about what had happened.

The woman, from Deniliquin, is expected to be extradited from Victoria to NSW to face charges after handing herself in to police at Echuca on Thursday night.

The woman had allegedly told onlookers "I had to drown my babies".

The boy is now in a stable condition in hospital, police said.

The court was told the boy was able to wriggle free when his younger brother started screaming on the riverbank and the mother turned around.

After escaping from his mum, the older boy was "savagely mauled" by a dog.

The distraught owner of the dog, named Buddy, told reporters the pit bull was trying to save the boy.

He said the grandmother had complained to government agencies numerous times about the woman's behaviour and tried to get her removed from her home.

The daughter then "snatched" the children in the grandmother's vehicle. Others said that while they did not know the mother personally, they knew of her and her "problems".
