U.S. to open CONCACAF Gold Cup against Panama on July 8

Haiti will play Nicaragua in a home-and-away series later this month to determine which team takes the final available place at the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Group C: Mexico, El Salvador, Curacao, Jamaica.

Mexico opens its group play on July 9 in San Diego against El Salvador.

In group A, traditionally strong nations Honduras and Costa Rica will be joined by Canada and French Guiana in what is on paper the weakest group but possibly the most even of the bunch.

The U.S., will face Panama to kick off Group B, July 8 in Nashville.

After the U.S. head coach Bruce Arena explained why the 2017 Gold Cup will be a crucial tournament for his team.

The U.S. will take on Panama in their first game of the group stage of the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup in July. Martinique and the victor of a playoff between Haiti and Nicaragua round out the group.

The schedule announcement was made at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, which will host the final on July 26. Canada meets French Guyana on July 7 at New Jersey in the tournament opener. "We open with a challenging game against Panama, and Martinique has the ability to surprise some teams with the quality of their players".

Defending champion Mexico, the favorite heading into this year's tournament, is the top seed in Group C. Jamaica, which was runner-up to Mexico in 2015, was also placed in the group.

CONCACAF announced the teams and the schedule for 2017 Gold Cup tournament Tuesday. If the Americans win Group B or finish second, they would advance to a quarterfinal doubleheader on July 19 in Philadelphia.
