Gas prices down 1.4 cents

The average is down 2.8 cents in the past month.

According to prices on the website GasBuddy.com, prices are around $2.49 per gallon.

AAA says the lowest average price was about $2.35 per gallon in the Detroit area. Prices in Shelby County rose 14 cents since last week, while prices in Hardin County fell 4 cents.

Gas prices are pretty steady in MI this week with just a one cent increase in the statewide average compared to last week's report.

AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins said gas prices could drop 5-10 cents in the near future. As demand starts to rise, "This season trend could push gas prices 25-50 cents higher by June". The lowest prices in the Bay Area are in Concord and Vallejo, where gas prices are averaging $2.92. More than 10% of USA gas stations are charging less than $2.00 a gallon as of Monday morning.

The price of gas in the state is 20 cents below the national average of $2.29.

The national average also dropped last week, but by a smaller margin (0.3 cents). "For now, there's a major tug of war going on with oil prices - a move higher or lower in the week ahead could determine the direction of prices the next few weeks or longer".

"We anticipate that, even through the early summer months, we anticipate gas being in the range of $2.50 or $2.60 at the most", Bubar said.
