Their identities are believed to the the gym's general manager Jeanine Ackerman and a personal trainer named Mario.
Another shopper said: "I heard people say there was a shooting, there was a rifle".
Witnesses said one of the victims appeared to be unconscious while another was alert and talking.
Benedicte, the woman at the gym, described the shooter as a tall, muscular African-American man.
"Initially we thought it was an active shooter. but there was a Coral Gables police officer at the mall at the time who was able to quickly determine it was a targeted shooting", Zabaleta said.
Coral Gables police raced to the scene, closing down activity outside the shopping center and putting close-by organizations on lockdown.
