Millions of Americans suffer from a mental health condition

Two free Youth Mental Health First Aid training classes are planned in the mid-valley.

The V.I. Health Department will focus on mental health this month, with a series of clinics and presentations highlighting community issues in the community.

"We started doing it in memory of Lukasi, who had mental health issues that led to his demise", said Forrest, referring to his son, who died by suicide in February 2016.

Participants will learn about a five-step action plan to help adolescents in both crisis and noncrisis situations; gain insight and basic knowledge into common mental health and addiction challenges; learn about connections to appropriate mental health and addiction services and support; strengthen skills and abilities on how to identify and reach out to adolescents in distress and crisis.

Today's announcements by Minister of Health Jonathan Coleman promise little to address the concerns raised by the People's Mental Health Report. "While more funding is being promised, it's unclear how much, and if any new money is going to be spent." says Kyle MacDonald People's Mental Health Report spokesperson.

Mr Coleman will point to investment in mental health services growing by 18 per cent to $1.4 billion in 2015/16, but admits more needs to be done. (RSVP at http://www.zeidlercenter.org/mentalhealth). It often means numerous trips to a doctor if the person is attempting to find the right medication; missed days of work or school; frequent trips to a mental health specialist or even hospitalization before one is able to return to his or her desired level of functioning.

People experience symptoms of mental illnesses differently-and some engage in potentially unsafe or risky behaviors to avoid or cover up symptoms of a potential mental health problem.
