Star Tom Cruise said today in an appearance on Australian morning show Sunrise that the sequel is "definitely happening".

Tom Cruise has finally confirmed that a sequel to the cult action film Top Gun is in the works.

Tom Cruise has confirmed there will be a Top Gun 2 while promoting his latest film The Mummy in Australia.

The actor said filming would start probably the next year and he knows with 100% certainty that it would happen.

The original Top Gun, which also starred Val Kilmer, Kelly McGillis and Tim Robbins, received mixed reviews but was a huge commercial hit.

The photo of Trudeau in mid-stride, snapped by Scotti, made it seem as though he raced right past the kids without being seen. After appearing to photobomb prom goers in Vancouver on the weekend, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau joined them for a selfie.

"It is definitely happening", he said on Seven's Sunrise program.

Top Gun celebrated its 30th anniversary past year and it was one of the films that made Tom Cruise a household name.

Cruise is now on the promotion trail for his new movie The Mummy. But director Tony Scott died by suicide that summer, and the sequel was hangared again until 2014 and 2015, when producer Jerry Bruckheimer hired a screenwriter and David Ellison's Skydance came on to produce.
