During his stay in Germany, Xi will also travel to Hamburg to attend the G20 summit.

"That's why we must all take action together quickly", he wrote.

The White House said Trump also talked with Saudi Arabia's King Salman, Crown Prince Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi, as well as Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. He called on Gulf leaders urging them to resolve the current ongoing dispute with Qatar in a diplomatic manner.

The visit, a month after Chinese Premier Li Keqiang traveled to Berlin to meet Merkel, comes at an extremely sensitive time for big-power relations.

Russian Federation and the United States are still discussing the timing of the encounter between Mr Trump and Mr Putin, according to a Kremlin aide.
