MHP: Missouri officer dead, massive manhunt underway for accused murderer

Posted August 08, 2017

Officers searched a house Monday morning where McCarthy was thought to be, but he was not there. They say he should be considered armed and risky.

Missouri State Highway Patrol's Sgt. Bill Lowe said McCarthy allegedly exited the Nitro and shot at Officer Michael just as Michael was exiting his police auto to approach the stopped vehicle.

When Michael exited his vehicle to initiate contact with the driver, he was shot, Lowe said, adding that the officer fired back but it's unknown at this time whether the suspect was struck.

Before the shooting, surveillance from a convenience store showed the driver of a Dodge Nitro, later identified by a witness as McCarthy, pull into the parking lot and enter the store, the probable cause statement said. "He was there protecting and serving, and that's what we are called to do, and he did it, and he did with heroic fashion", Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Bill Lowe said.

The Missouri Highway Patrol were looking for Ian McCarthy, 39, of Clinton as a person-of-interest in the fatal shooting.

Michael returned fire but was not able to stop the man from driving away.

Police also said McCarthy is armed and risky.

He had been with the department for less than a year when he was shot and killed.

Officials believe he may still be traveling on foot and say it is likely he is still in the Clinton area.

McCarthy now faces charges for first-degree murder and felony armed criminal action in Henry County, where the city of Clinton is located.
