Soccer season comes to an end in the first round of district playoffs

The Seaholm Boys Varsity soccer team’s season came to an end last Tuesday, October 20. The Maples lost 2-0 to Rochester High School in the first round of the district playoffs.

“We played great,” Head Coach David Reed-Nordwall said. “It was our best game of the season.”

The Maples kept it even until ten minutes before the half where Rochester scored off a penalty kick. Seaholm continued to play strong and nearly scored off a header to Charlie Kelly midway through the second half. The Maples fought toward the end but let up another in the last ten minutes of the second half which proved to be too much for the Maples.

“We never gave up, and stayed positive the whole game,” junior midfielder Nick Shaheen said.

“We felt like we could have one that game,” senior captain Mike Beck added. “They were a weaker team than most of the teams we played this season.”

The Maples finished their season with a record of 1-18-2. Seaholm knew it would be difficult to match last year’s success, where they lost in the Regional Finals, with such a young team, and moving up to Division 1.

“It was definitely harder playing in D1, but it was good to play against more experienced teams,” senior captain Charlie Kelly said.

“We were a young team so it wasn’t always easy to stay composed,” Beck said. “We could've also kept the ball out our net a little bit less but we should've scored more as well.

The Maples were also plagued with a major knee injury to junior captain Brandon Weisman, who was out for most of the season.

Despite a losing record coach Reed-Nordwall his still proud of his team, and has high hopes for next year.

“We we’re resilient, got better throughout the year, and improved on our skills every game,” Reed-Nordwall said. “Next year we’ll be older and more experienced and will continue to get better and keep pushing.”

“Our goal this season was to stay very connected as a team, to build a brotherhood,” Kelley added, “which I feel we did throughout the entire season.”
